Abstract
Between 1389 and 1978, the Turks built thousands of architectural structures in Bulgaria, then was composed of several provinces connected to the Ottoman State. While some of these structures were destroyed over time, a large part of them were destroyed by the Russians after the 1877-8 Ottoman-Russian War and some were burnt down and destroyed by the Bulgarian nationalists in the years following this war. Out of the more than three thousand structures, less than three hundred have survived to this day. In this article; the present condition of these surviving tombs and shrines, determined in two trips, will be discussed and they will be classified according to their common characteristics. By presenting the current status of these tombs and shrines, attention will be drawn to the subject with the hope to shed light on the need for more work in this field.
