Pulmonary Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma: Case Report

Abstract

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the tracheabronchial tree is a slow-growing malignant tumor arising from the submucosal glands. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is an extremely rare tumor of the lung that acounts for 0.3% of thoracic malignancies. Fifty-percent of pa- tients are aged under 30 years. Surgical resection is the mainstay of the treatment and it rarely requires adjuvant treatment. A 33-year-old female patient was admitted to our clinic with complaints of cough and hemoptysis. A mass lesion in right middle lobe was detected in the thorax computed tomography. Alt- hough fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed a polipoid endobronchial lesion occupying the right middle lobe, bronchoscopic biopsy was undiagnosed. The patient underwent thoracotomy with right middle lobectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection. Histopathological examination revealed a low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The patient did not receive adjuvant treatment and is still alive without evidence of recurrence 29 months after the initial diagnosis.

Özet

Trakeobonşial sistemin mukoepidermoid karsinomları submukozal bezlerden köken alan, yavaş büyüyen malign özellikte tümörlerdir. Çok nadir görülür ve akciğer tümörlerinin %0,3'ünü oluşturmaktadır. Ol- guların %50'si 30 yaşın altındadır. Cerrahi rezeksiyon tedavinin temelini oluşturur ve nadiren adjuvan tedavi gerekmektedir. Otuz üç yaşında kadın hasta kliniği- mize öksürük ve hemoptizi şikâyeti ile başvurdu. Ol- gunun toraks bilgisayarlı tomografisinde sağ orta lobda düzgün sınırlı kitle lezyon tespit edildi. Fiberop- tik bronkoskopik incelemede sağ orta lobda polipoid lezyon izlenmesine rağmen bronkoskopik biyopsi ile tanı elde edilemedi. Orta lobektomi ve lenf nodu diseksiyonu yapılan hastada histopatolojik inceleme düşük gradeli mukoepidermoid karsinom olarak raporlandı. Adjuvan tedavi verilmeyen hasta tanıdan 29 ay sonra halen hayattadır ve nüks izlenmemiştir.
