Status of Health Discipline Students to Receive Training on Occupational Health and Safety and Exposure to Occupational Accident

Abstract

AIM: The study was conducted to find out the training status of health discipline students who were enrolled in health institutes as intern students about the occupational health and safety, and their risk of exposure to work accidents. METHODS: A total of 452 volunteers who were 18 years of age or older among 3426 health discipline high school and university students who continued their clinical training in 12 health facilities affiliated to the General Secretariat of Public Hospitals Association in Istanbul Province between 23.11.2016/23.02.2017 were included in this cross-sectional descriptive study. The data were collected using the “Structured Information Form” which was developed under the guidance of literature and composed of 23 questions. RESULTS: It was found that 90.5% of the students (n=409) were educated about “Occupational Health and Safety” before the clinical practice in the school or the institution they were going to undergo training . They were exposed to work accidents at the rate of 80.9% (n=51), and 76.1% (n=48) of them were students in nursing. Among the trainees (n=409) 12.4% (n=51) of them were exposed to work accidents while 27.9% (n=12) of untrained students w(n=43) were injured. CONCLUSION: As a result, it was found that students who received occupational health and safety education were exposed to the occupational accidents at a lesser rate.

AMAÇ: Çalışma, sağlık kurumlarında staj yapmak üzere kabul edilen sağlık disiplini öğrencilerinin iş sağlığı ve güvenliği hakkında eğitim alma ve iş kazasına maruz kalma durumlarını belirlemek amacıyla yapıldı. YÖNTEM: Kesitsel tanımlayıcı nitelikte olan çalışmaya, İstanbul ilinde bir Kamu Hastaneleri Birliği Genel Sekreterliğine bağlı 12 sağlık kurumunda klinik uygulama eğitimine devam eden, farklı sağlık disiplini lise ve üniversite öğrencisi 3426 kişi arasından 18 yaş ve üzerinde olan, gönüllü 452 sağlık disiplini öğrencisi dahil edildi. Veriler literatür rehberliğinde geliştirilen ve toplam 23 sorudan oluşan “Yapılandırılmış Bilgi Formu” kullanılarak toplandı. BULGULAR: Öğrencilerin %90,5’inin (n=409) okulda ya da staj yapacakları kurumda klinik uygulama öncesi “İş Sağlığı ve Güvenliği” konusunda eğitim aldığı belirlendi. Öğrencilerin, %13,9’unun (n=63) iş kazasına maruz kaldığı, maruziyet yaşanan iş kazasının %80,9 oranında (n=51) en fazla delici kesici alet yaralanmaları olduğu ve iş kazasına maruz kalan öğrencilerden (n=63) %76,1’inin (n=48) hemşirelik bölümü öğrencisi olduğu belirlendi. Eğitim alan öğrenciler arasında (n=409) iş kazasına maruz kalma oranı %12,4 (n=51) iken eğitim almayan öğrenciler arasında (n=43) yaralanma oranı %27,9 (n=12) olarak bulundu. SONUÇ: Araştırmada, iş sağlığı ve güvenliği eğitimi alan öğrencilerin iş kazasına maruz kalma oranının daha düşük olduğu ve en fazla delici kesici alet yaralanmasının yaşandığı belirlendi.
