Nurses’ Ideas About the Bachelor’s Degree Completion Program

Abstract

AIM: This study was conducted to determine the ideas of the nurses who completed formal bachelor’s degree program and undergraduate nursing students receiving distance education about the bachelor’s degree completion program. METHODS: This is a descriptive study. Four hundred and twenty-six nurses working in a university hospital after completing a formal undergraduate program, and 169 nurses who were attending remote distance education program were included in the survey, and data were collected using questionnaire forms. The questionnaire form consisted of 11 questions for nurses attending nursing degree distance education program and 8 questions for nurses who completed a formal undergraduate education. Significance was evaluated at p <0.05 level. Descriptive statistics and Pearson chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, Fisher Freeman Halton test, and Yates continuity correction tests were used. RESULTS: Of the nurses receiving formal education, 32.6% supported their colleagues who started to receive distant education, and 62% of them did not find completing the bachelor’s degree program appropriate. Nurses receiving formal education more frequently stated that distance education is an easily vested right, a wrongdoing executed against them, and it will reduce the quality of nursing education. A statistically, and highly significant difference was found between the intents of the nurses who started to receive distance education and those who received formal education (p<0.05). Nearly equal number of nurses who received formal education (18.6%),and students who received distance education, (19.2%) stated that clinical practice contributed to vocational development. CONCLUSION: The distance undergraduate education program caused the feeling of unfairness among formal education bachelor’s degree graduates, and it is not supported by them. New regulations should be implemented to resolve the criticisms made towards application of internship included in the bachelor’s degree completion program.

AMAÇ: Bu çalışma, örgün lisans programını bitiren hemşireler ile uzaktan lisans eğitimini almakta olan hemşirelerin, lisans tamamlama programı hakkındaki görüş ve düşüncelerini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. YÖNTEM: Araştırma tanımlayıcı bir araştırmadır. Çalışmaya, bir üniversite hastanesinde görevli örgün lisans programı mezunu 426 hemşire ile uzaktan eğitime devam eden 169 hemşirenin tümü örnekleme alınmış ve veriler anket formu ile toplanmıştır. Anket formunda, uzaktan eğitime devam edenler için 11 soru, mezun olanlar için 8 soru bulunmaktadır. Tanımlayıcı istatistiklerden, Pearson ki-kare test, Fisher’s exact test, Fisher Freeman Halton test ve Yates’ continuity correction test (Yates düzeltmeli ki-kare) kullanılmıştır. BULGULAR: Örgün eğitim alanların %32,6’sı, uzaktan eğitime başlayan meslektaşlarını desteklediğini, %62’si lisans tamamlamayı uygun bulmadığını bildirmiştir. Örgün eğitim alanlar, uzaktan eğitimin kolay kazanılmış bir hak ve kendilerine yapılan bir haksızlık olduğunu ve mevcut uzaktan eğitim ile eğitim kalitesinin düşeceğini daha fazla oranda bildirmiştir. Uzaktan eğitim alanların programa başlama amaçları ile örgün eğitim alanlara göre uzaktan eğitim alanların amaçları arasında istatistiksel olarak ileri düzeyde anlamlı farklılık saptanmıştır (p<0,05). Örgün eğitim alanlar ile uzaktan eğitim alanlar yakın oranlarla (%18,6, %19,2) klinik uygulamanın mesleki gelişime katkıda bulunduğunu bildirmişlerdir. SONUÇ: Uzaktan eğitim lisans programı, örgün eğitim alanlarda haksızlık yapıldığı duygusuna neden olmakta ve desteklenmemektedir. Lisans tamamlama programının staj uygulamasına yönelik getirilen eleştirilerin giderilmesine yönelik düzenlemeler yapılmalıdır.
