Abstract
Fingerprints are among the most important evidences found at the crime scene. Since fingerprints can not be changed, will remain unchanged, are unique and can be classified, are among the most important evidences used in solving crimes. Poroscopy is a method which uses the relative locations of pores, which are the sweat gland openings on the skin surface forming the friction ridges found on the palmar site of hands and feet. Poroscopy is a subsidiary subject of fingerprint identification. On the world especially in developed countries, fingerprints are being examined in three levels. First Level: It includes the main print patterns like lasso, wirbel and does not contain sufficient number of features to be used in identification. Second Level: This level is including some features about shapes and numbers of friction ridges, such as (bifurcation, dot, lake ...) and identification is conducted according to these characteristic features. Third Level: This level is including details about small shapes found on friction ridges (edgescopy), unit friction ridge thickness, and relative locations of pores (poroscopy). The details contained in this levels are used always together with second level features and can also be used to perform identification if there is not sufficient number of second level features. 1st and 2nd level standarts are being used in our country but not 3rt level. If we consider the average rate 25-30% of fingerprints which are not suitable for classification and comparison among all fingerprints collected at crime scene and if we take into a account that the reliability of the classified and comparable fingerprints will also be investigated by the cross-examination procedure which is recently entered in our law, the importarice of the study of pores and the importance of use of pores together with 2nd level and alone to establish an identification is obviously appearent.
