Abstract
Our article is the Turkish translation of the article titled "The Role of Nature in Modern Painting" written in 1949 by Clement Greenberg, one of the effective critics of 20th century on the purpose of highlighting the receivers with a difficulty in comprehension and definition by thinking that modern art is rather different than riature. The shapes the cubists draw by analyzing nature are efforts to understand the logic of nature rather than reflecting the scene. They moved to surface by escaping from illusion, they formed a relationship between the shape coming from nature and the gap of picture plane, and organized the imaginative images of the structure of objects by bursting their nature scenes on a flat platform. The organization of picture changed art work into an object indirectly. The Cubism, which is one of the most important avant garde movements creating the pluralist art environment of 20th century is based on its relationship with nature. The aesthetic judgements of the cubists give us the opportunity to understand the failure of stylistic art regarding the success or gap of Abstract Art with a reference of nature as a free field in which arbitrary I arrangements can be made.
