Fungal agents isolated from inpatients of Hematology Clinics of Ankara University Medical Faculty

Abstract
Granulocytes are the most important defence factors against opportunistic fungal pathogens and especially systemic Candida infections of the host. Candida spp., Aspergillus spp. and the members of Mucoraceae are the common opportunistic pathogens in neutropenic patients. In the present study, fungal infections during neutropenic and non-neutropenic episodes in 162 patients were investigated at İbn-i Sina Hospital, Department of Hematology between February 1997 and February 1998. A total of 196 febrile neutropenic episodes and 66 febrile non-neutropenic episodes were seen in all patients (47 patients experienced more than one episode), 79 (40.3%) febrile neutropenic episodes and 22 (33.3%) febrile non-neutropenic episodes were the microbiologically documented infections/The number of fungal infections in the neutropenic patients was 5 (5/196) and in non-neutropenic patients was 3 (3/66), making a total of 8 fungal infections during the 262 episodes (8/262).
Özet
Bir konağın fırsatçı fungal patojenlere ve özellikle sistemik Candida enfeksiyonlarına karşı korunmasında en önemli faktör nötrofillerdir. Candida spp., Aspergillus spp. ve Mucoraceae ailesi üyeleri, nötropenik hastalarda yaygın fırsatçı fungal patojenlerdir. Çalışmamızda Şubat 1997-Şubat 1998 tarihleri arasında İbn-i Sina Hastanesi Hematoloji Kliniğinde tedavi edilen 162 hasta fungal enfeksiyonların saptanması amacıyla hem nötropenik hem de nötropenik olmayan dönemde izlenmiştir. Hastalarda toplam 196 febril nötropeni (47 hastada birden fazla atak) ve 66 nötropenik olmayan ateş atağı olmuştur. Nötropenik dönemde olan atakların 79'unda (%40.3) ve nötropenik olmayan atakların 22'sinde (%33.3) mikrobiyolojik olarak enfeksiyon tanısı konulmuş ve nötropenik ataklarda 5 (5/196) ve nötropenik olmayan ataklarda 3 (3/66) olmak üzere toplam 8 (8/262) fungal enfeksiyon saptanmıştır.
