Macular involvement in Behçet's disease

Abstract

Macular Involvement In Behçet's Disease This study was performed to evaluate the macular involvement in 513 patients with Behçet's disease. Of the patients, 431 were male, and 82 were female. For 296 of the 513 patients, the Behçet diagnosis was made by our team on the basis of ocular findings obtained from the ophthalmic examination. The remaining 217 had been diagnosed previously and our examinations also revealed Behçet's disease in these patients. There was no macular involvement in 61.2 % of the eyes while we detected macular edema in 24.1 %, hemorrhage and/or exudate in 6.55 %, pigment epithelial defects or scars in 6.55 % and macular hole in 1.6 % of the patients at initial examination. The prevalence of macular involvement was greater in males than in females (p< 0.05). As far as the risk of macular involvement was concerned, there was no sex difference in patients who were diagnosed previously and who had a new diagnosis and there was no correlation with the duration of Behçet's disease. There was no statistical significance between the age of onset and macular involvement in both sexes (p> 0.05). After one-year follow-up, the incidence of macular edema and hemorrhage and/or exudate were 18.6 % and 2.1 % respectively in 285 eyes.

Behçet hastalığında makula tutulumunu değerlendirmek amacıyla 513 Behçet olgusunun 900 gözü muayene edildi. Olguların 431'i erkek, 82'si kadın idi. Olgulardan 296'sına tarafımızdan ilk kez Behçet tanısı kondu, 217'sinde ise daha önce konmuş olan tanı doğrulandı. İlk muayenede gözlerin % 61.2'sinde makula tabii idi, % 24.1'inde makula ödemi, % 6.55'inde ka¬nama ve/veya eksuda, % 6.55'inde makula dejenerasyonu, % 1.6'sındajse makula deliği mevcut¬tu. Makula tutulum prevalansının erkeklerde daha yüksek olduğu saptandı (p 0.05). 1 yıl süre ile düzenli olarak izlenebilen 285 gözde makula ödem insidansı % 18.6, ka¬nama, eksuda insidansı ise % 2.1 olarak saptandı.
