Prophylactic laser photocoagulation for retinal lattice degeneration

Abstract
PURPOSE: To evaluate the prognosis of the retinal lattice degeneration after prophylactic laser photocoagulation. METHOD: 87 eyes of 72 patients who were treated with laser photocoagulation were included into this retrospective study. Prophylactic laser treatment was performed to aphacic and/or myopic fellow eyes of the patients who had retinal detachments in the other eyes, single eyes of the patients who had bilateral symptomatic lattice degeneration and the eyes with retinal hole and/or retinal tears associated with symptomatic lattice degeneration. Mean follow-up period was 4.7 years. RESULTS: Retinal detachment developed in only two eyes of two young myopic men with retinal detachment in their other eyes. One of them was due to new retinal tear two months later than laser photocoagulation and the other one has developed on the basis of vitreo-retinal traction to the old retinal tear after three years of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Properly performed prophylactic laser photocoagulation for retinal lattice degeneration decreases the risk of retinal detachment.

AMAÇ: Retina dekolmanı proflaksisi için lazer uyguladığımız retinal lattice dejeneresansı olgularında prognozu belirlemek. YÖNTEM: 1988-1997 yılları arasında lazer uygulanan 72 olgunun 87 gözü retrospektif olarak incelenmiştir. Yırtıktı ve delikli semptomatik lattice dejeneresanslarına, diğer gözde retina dekolmanı olan lattice dejeneresanslı, miyopik ve afakik olgulara ve iki gözünde semptomatik lattice dejeneresansı olan olguların tek gözlerine lazer uygulanmıştır. Ortalama izleme süresi 4.7 yıldır. BULGULAR: Bir olguda tedaviden iki ay sonra yeni yırtık oluşumu ile, diğerinde üç yıl sonra eski yırtıklı lattice bölgesindeki traksiyonla retina dekolmanı gelişmiştir.Bu iki olgu da diğer gözlerinden retina dekolmanı ameliyatı geçirmiş, yüksek miyopik, genç erkek hastalardı. SONUÇ: Lattice dejeneresansında doğru endikasyon ve uygulama ile laser profilaksinin retina dekolmanı riskini azalttığı görüşündeyiz.
