Abstract
Pterygium is a degenerative disorder that is characterized by the fibrovascular proliferation of bulbar conjunctiva. Etiopathogenesis of pterygium has not been appreciated yet. Ultraviolet irradiaton is the major risk factor for the development and progression of pterygium. Treatment is mainly surgical but the aim is to avoid recurrence and provide ocular surface reconstruction. Therefore excision of pterygium is combined with adjuvant medical agents such as mitomycin C/beta irradiation and/or ocular surface reconstruction techniques such as conjunctival flap transposition, conjunctival or limbal autograft, amniotic membrane transplantation and/or lamellar keratoplasty.
