Abstract
PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the interaction of laser burns developed in rabbit retina with retrobulbar methylprednisolone injection clinically and histopathologically. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five white rabbits were treated with 50 laser shots to the inferonasal quadrant with 500 micron spot diameter, 500mW energy, 0.1sec duration (532 nm- Double frequency YAG laser) under ketamin-xylasine anesthesia by the help of a +90D lens at the biomicroscop. The right eyes of the rabbits received 40mg methylprednisolon injection, while the left eyes were observed untreated. Laser scar progression was observed, the rabbits were sacrificed on the first day (one animal), 7th day (two animals), 15th day (two animals) and were examined histopathologically. RESULTS: The laser scars in the right eyes with steroid application were more stable, while there were dense intraretinal hemorrhages in the left eyes. In histopatologic examination, tissue reaction in steroid injected eyes showed less inflammation and hemorrhage, while there were severe hemorrhage and inflammatory cells in the other eyes. CONCLUSION: Retrobulbar methylprednisolone application can be effective in limiting the extent of retinal laser burns
