Abstract
PURPOSE: To determine hemodynamic alterations within the ophthalmic, central retinal, and short posterior ciliary arteries in patients with MS with or without optic atrophy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty patients (40 eyes) who had MS with or without optic atrophy and 26 control subjects (52 eyes) were evaluated with color Doppler imaging. The peak systolic velocity, end diastolic velocity, resistivity index and pulsatility index were assessed. RESULTS: Ten patients had history of optic neuritis and there were generalize optic atrophy in 6 eyes and temporal optic atrophy in 9 eyes. We did not find statistical significant difference in blood flow velocities and vascular resistance of patients with or without optic atrophy (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Orbital hemodynamics does not alter in MS patients with or without optic atrophy, and the development of optic atrophy does not appear to be concerned with retrobulbar circulation.
