Abstract
Vernal keratoconjunctivitis is a chronic, mostly bilateral allergic inflammation of the ocular surface which occurs with sea- sonal attacks. Although a spontaneous remission may occur with pubertal termination, it can affect visual acuity due to pseudoptosis and may cause corneal complications. For this reason, it is important to start a topical anti-inflammatory treatment timely and effectively. The patient who was admitted to our clinic due to the hyperemia, pain and decreased visual acuity in the right eye developed a “shield ulcer” secondary to vernal keratoconjunctivitis in the right and then in the left eye. The patient underwent topical anti-inflammatory therapy and amniotic membrane transplantation. The patient with complete healing of the “shield ulcer” is still under treatment with topical cyclosporin-A and is still being followed. In this case report, we aimed to discuss the treatment and results of “shield ulcer” secondary to vernal keratoconjunctivitis.
