Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of renelase and cerebellin enzymes in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. Material and Method: A total of 50 patients with 24 proliferative diabetic retinopathy and 26 control patients were included in this study. Blood samples were centrifuged at 4000g for 10 minutes. Serum renelase and cerebellin levels were measured by ELISA method using appropriate kits. Results: Mean renalase level was 19,24±16,27 ng/mL (2,40-56,91) in proliferative diabetic retinopathy group and 19.70 ± 15.58 ng/mL (2,30-656,13) in the control group. There was not a statistically significant difference between the groups (p =0.920). Mean cerebellin level was 52.94 ± 16.01 pg/mL (30.35 - 85.76) in proliferative diabetic retinopathy group and 49.19 ± 16.68 pg/mL (12.18-77.59) in the control group. There was not a statistically significant difference between the groups (p=0.465). Conclusion: To understand the effect of hemodynamic factors on the development of proliferative diabetic retinopathy, more comprehensive and extensive studies of cerebellin and renelase enzymes can be planned. More studies are needed to use renelase as an ischemic biomarker in the eye
