Abstract
Infectious diseases have affected societies throughout history, and various solutions have been produced to treat and prevent the spread of these diseases. Ottomans also struggled with many infectious diseases. In the last period of the Ottoman Empire, syphilis disease, which was understood to reach the Anatolian geography through different transmission routes, was particularly effective in Kastamonu Province and its surroundings. Various solutions have been produced for the treatment of the epidemic. One of these solutions is the construction of a hospital for the treatment of syphilis. Syphilis hospitals, which started to be opened due to the epidemic diseases experienced in the 19th century and generally named gurebâ hospitals, are a part of the modernization of public health services in this period. Some of these buildings, which exemplify the civil hospitals, which have an essential place among the new building types in the recent Ottoman architecture, were built and established in Kastamonu Province, central sanjak, İnebolu, Bolu, Safranbolu, Sinop, and Çankırı. The syphilis hospital in Safranbolu has survived from these examples, rebuilt or transformed from other buildings. Information about the hospitals’ architectural and decorative features can be obtained from written sources and visual documents. In this article, information is given about the fight against the syphilis epidemic in Kastamonu Province, and the construction process, architectural and decorative features of syphilis hospitals within the province are evaluated.
