The relationship between religion and politics in ımam al-maturidi

Abstract

Discussions regarding the relationship between religion and politics are located under the chapter entitled "Imamat and Caliphate" in Islamic Theology books. Especially, sunni theologians deal with this issue as a re-action to Shi'ite theologians who consider Imamat (religio-political lead-ership) as one of the basic tenets of religion. Al-Maturidi, one of the most prominent Muslim theologians does not specifically wrestle with this issue in his works. Although Imam al-Maturidi does not have a separate chap-ter for the issue of "Imamat and Caliphate" in his books, this does not mean that he is not interested in this topic. As a matter of fact, in his books Kitab al-Tawhid and Kitab Ta'wilat al-Qur'an, he mentioned topics related to religion and politics such as freedom of religion and consicence, emanet (entrustment), competent (ehliyet), justice, counceling (shura), al-legiance, obedience, management, promoting good and prohibiting evil, and juridical decision making. All of these issues are still relevant to mod-ern Islamic political thought. Thus, I suggest, studying al-Maturidi's reli-gious and political thoughts will shed light on contemporary Islamic polit-ical thought, and provide new approaches to deal with these matters.

Kelam kitaplarında din ve siyaset ilişkileri “imamet/hilafet” başlığı altın-da yer alır. Özellikle Sünni Kelam okullarında imamet konularına yer ve-rilmesi, Şia‟ya tepkiden dolayıdır. Çünkü onlar, imamet meselesini, dinin temel inanç esaslarından saymışlardır. Biz İmam-ı Mâturîdî‟nin eserle-rinde müstakil bir başlık olarak „imamet/hilafet‟ konusuna yer vermediği-ni görüyoruz. Şüphesiz bunun farklı nedenleri olabilir. Her ne kadar İmam-ı Mâturîdî, eserlerinde siyasi bir konu olan “imamet/hilafet” me-selesine ilişkin ayrı bir başlık açmamışsa da bu onun ilgilenmediğini gös-termez. Nitekim o, gerek Te‟vilat ve gerekse Kitabu‟t-Tevhid adlı eserinde din ve siyasetle ilişkili olan din ve vicdan özgürlüğü, emanet, ehliyet, ada-let, şura, biat, itaat, yönetim, iyiliği teşvik etmek ve kötülükten sakındır-mak, hüküm çıkarmak gibi konulara yer vermiştir. Hiç kuşkusuz, onun di-ni ve siyasi görüşleri günümüz çağdaş İslami siyaset düşüncesine ışık tu-tacak ve yeni açılımlar sağlayacak niteliktedir.
