Halitosis: Approachs in diagnosis and treatment

Abstract

Halitosis (oral malodour) has been defined as offensive odours emitted from the mouth. Oral malodour is frequently related to poor oral hygiene or disease of the oral cavity. Oral malodour has been correlated with volatile sulphur compounds produced in the oral cavity by metabolic activity of bacteria colonizing the periodontal sites and the dorsum of the tongue. Also, ı t may also indicate a serious systemic illnes that requires diagnosis and treatment. Oral malodour has a negative impact on daily social life to those who suffer from it. This condition can have major detrimental social implications for the sufferer and furthermore, it can impair their psychology. Therefore, proper investigation and management of these cases are great importance for patients. Treatment of oral malodour is directed at the underlying cause. The aim of this paper is to inform dentists and patients about the etiology of halitosis, its classification, diagnosis and treatment strategies for the condition.

Halitozis (ağız kokusu) ağızdan nefes yoluyla çıkan kötü koku durumu olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Ağız kokusu sıklıkla kötü oral hijyen veya oral kavitedeki bir hastalığa bağlı olarak meydana gelebilmektedir. Ağız kokusundan, dilin dorsumunda ve periodontal bölgedeki bakterilerin metabolik aktiviteleri sonucu ağız boşluğunda biriken volatil sülfür bileşikleri sorumludur. Ayrıca teşhis ve tedavi gerektiren ciddi bir sistemik hastalığa bağlı olarak da ağız kokusu oluşabilir. Ağız kokusu bireylerin sosyal hayatını negatif etkiler. Bu durum kişinin sosyal ilişkilerinde çok büyük zararlara neden olabilir, hatta psikolojisini bozabilir. Bu yüzden bu olguların uygun bir şekilde araştırılması ve tedavi edilmesi hastalar için son derece önemlidir. Ağız kokusunun tedavisi altta yatan nedene yönelik yapılır. Bu makalenin amacı, dişhekimleri ve hastaları halitozisin etiyolojisi, sınıflandırması, teşhis ve tedavi yaklaşımları konusunda bilgilendirmektir.
