Abstract

The oldest known texts of Kabeiros/Kabeiroi belong to Akousilaos of Argos and Pherekydes of Syros and Aeschylus who were the authors of the century 6th - 5th century BC. There are many opinions about the nature of their cult, ori-gins and the meaning of their names. In the literature, their difference from the Korybantes, Kouretes, Dioskouroi, Daktyloi, the male demi-gods (daimones), and from Megaloi Theoi who show the similar characteristics with them is not clear. Ancient authors specify that their main cult center were Lemnos, Samothrace and Thebai. In this study, we tried to observe the spread of the cult according to the ancient texts, inscriptions and coins.
