Abstract
The volcanic rocks of active subduction zones such as those in the Pontides, are continuously covered by formations occur with the next events. Covered volcanics are subjected to more or less textural, mineralogical and geochemical changes under lithostatic pressure and increasing geothermal gradient. The Eastern Pontid Jurassic volcanic rocks formed on the sea-floor have undergone alteration of sea water. It was covered by formations with a thickness of over 4000 m until the end of Eocene. The evidences of the sea water alteration have been partially or totally destroyed by the influence of later burial and contact metamorphism. Geothermometer studies made from chlorite mineral chemistry indicate that the temperature rises up to 250°C during burial. Formation temperatures of some dolomites in the Berdiga Formation above the volcanites also support this data. It is estimated that the lithostatic pressures increased by 1.5 kilobars from the deposits on the volcanics.
