Abstract
This article deals with Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī’s argument, which is that “complete definition is impossible,” and examines its influence on relevant discussions in later periods, as well as how subsequent scholars are engaged with this argument. Particularly, it will focus on the positive argument proposed by Tashkoprīzāde, an eminent sixteenth-century Ottoman philosopher, which challenges al-Rāzī’s position on the subject. According to al-Rāzī’s negative argument, the complete definition is actuall y circular definition, because it entails that the whole parts of a definiendum are contained by its definiens, and that the object is identical to the total of those parts. And so, complete definition indicates the error of circular definition. As opposed to al-Rāzī’s argument, Tashkoprīzāde holds the idea that “complete definition is possible”. For him, although what definiendum and definiens contain are the same, their forms of being presented in our minds are different. In other words, if one talks about the complete sameness in definiendum and definiens, not only what they contain should be the same, but also their forms should be identical. Therefore, according to Tashkoprīzāde, in order to express that definiendum and definiens are not identical, it is enough to demonstrate that they are different in terms of their forms. In this paper, I aim to compare and contrast these two contradictory arguments, by referring to the distinction between form and content, i.e. meaning and reference. In the problematique of complete definition, both sides deem the contents of definiendum and definiens to be the same. However, the main discussion between them is related to the forms in which those contents are represented in the mind. In this paper, I investigate the arguments of the two opposite theories of meaning, regarding complete definition, demonstrating that the reason behind the emergence of this issue has to do with the fixed and changeable form theories, both related to meaning. For the period between al-Rāzī and Tashkoprīzāde, Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī defends the idea of complete definition, whereas ʿAḍūḍ al-Dīn al-Ījī rejects his argument. This paper also refers to these philosophers briefly.
