Place of Turkey in international Scientific literature on landslide susceptibility Studies

Abstract

In Turkey, natural disasters have caused a lot of economic losses and casualties, and after the earthquakes, landslides have the secondary major effect throughout these losses and damages. For this reason, landslide studies and assessments are a very important issue for Turkey. When the international literature concerning with the landslides has been investigated for the last two decades, it is revealed that there is an important increase in the number of studies on landslide susceptibility. In addition, depending upon the developments in GIS (Geographic Information Systems), RS (Remote Sensing), and computer technologies, important achievements have been reached in these studies. Taking into consideration these assessments, in this study, aiming at evaluating the status of landslide susceptibility studies in which the Turkish scientists are involved in the international scientific literature, published papers indexed in WoS (Web of Science) e-data base were investigated. In this context, a total of 21 studies were reached, concerning directly with landslide susceptibility assessments. As a result of investigating methodologies and technologies used in these studies, it is determined that Turkey has a special status among the landslide susceptibility studies published in the international scientific literature. Furthermore, when the number and citations of these studies are considered, it is possible to mention that there exists an important increase in the last 5 years period, in particular.

Özet

Türkiye’de doğal afetler nedeniyle birçok can ve mal kaybı meydana gelmiş olup, verdiği zararlar açısından heyelanlar, depremlerden sonra ikinci sırada bulunmaktadır. Bu nedenle, heyelan çalışmaları ve değerlendirmeleri, Türkiye için son derece önemli bir konudur. Heyelanlarla ilgili son 20 yıla ait uluslararası bilimsel literatür incelendiğinde, heyelan duyarlılık çalışmalarının sayısında önemli bir artış olduğu ortaya çıkmaktadır. Ayrıca, CBS (Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemleri), UA (Uzaktan Algılama) ve bilgisayar teknolojilerindeki gelişmelere koşut olarak, bu çalışmalarda önemli ilerlemeler kaydedilmiştir. Bu değerlendirmeler dikkate alınarak, Türk bilim insanlarının içinde bulunduğu heyelan duyarlılığı çalışmalarının uluslar arası literatürdeki yerinin ortaya konulmasını amaçlayan bu çalışmada, WoS (Web of Science) e-veri tabanında taranan ve yayımlanmış çalışmalar incelenmiştir. Bu kapsamda, doğrudan heyelan duyarlılığının değerlendirildiği toplam 21 adet çalışmaya ulaşılmıştır. Bu çalışmalarda kullanılan yöntembilim ve teknolojilerin incelenmesi sonucunda, Türkiye’nin heyelan duy1arlılığına ilişkin uluslararası bilimsel literatür içinde, önemli bir konumda bulunduğu belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca, heyelan duyarlılığı ile ilgili yapılan çalışma sayıları ve bunların aldıklar atıflar açısından yapılan değerlendirmeler sonucunda ise, özellikle son 5 yılda önemli bir artıştan söz etmek mümkündür.
