Abstract

In this study, the geology, mineralogy and genesis of the bentonite occurrences have been examined, from Ayvacık(Çanakkale) region. There are nine bentonite deposits in this region which were within Miocene volcanic rocks. Bentonites have been formed as a result of alteration caused by hydrothermal solutions rising up through the faults and altering the andesite, thrachyandesila and luffs and, devitrification of original glassy material (glassy tuffs). XRD analyses revealed that dioctahedral smectite was the dominant phase in all of the bantonile occurrences. Kaolinite, illite. cristobalite and halloysite are the common impurities in the clay fraction. In the clay fraction, the main mineral par agenesis are; montmorillonite+silicaminerals(opalCT, cristobalita);montmorillonite+kaolinite+halloy site; montmorillonite+illite+chstobalite; and beidellite+kaolinite +illite+ cristobalite + iron oxides.

XRD analizleri; bentonit oluşumlarının tümünde dioktaedral smektit'in esas bileşen olduğunu göstermiştir. Kristobalit, kaolinit, illit ve halloysit kil boyutundaki yaygın safsızlıkları oluşturur. Bentonitteki kil boyutu esas mineral parajenezleri; montmorillonit + silis mineralleri(kristobalit, opal-CT); montmorillonit + kaolinit + halloysit; montmorillonit + illit + kristobalit ve baydellit + illit + kaolinit + kristobalit + derniroksit şeklindedir.
