The comparison of effects of alendronate and calcitonin treatment in men with osteoporosis

Abstract
In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in research investigating the epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of osteoporosis and fragility fractures in men. This study was performed to compare the effects of alendronate and calcitonin treatment in male osteoporosis. Thirty men with osteoporosis were enrolled in this study. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured at the proximal femur and lumbar spine by using dual-photon absorptiometry. Thirty men with osteoporosis were randomly divided into two groups. BMD was measured twice as before the treatment and one year later. The end of the treatment a significant improvement was found in the BMD levels of the lomber spine in both groups (p<0.001). There was no significant difference of BMD at the proximal femur when the groups were compared with each other (p>0.05). There was no significant difference of BMD levels of proximal femur when the results were compared either within the groups or between two groups (p>0.05).
Özet
Son yıllarda yapılan araştırmalarda, erkek osteoporozunun epidemiyolojisi, önlenmesi, tanı ve tedavisinde bir artış göze çarpmaktadır. Bu çalışma erkeklerde osteoporoz tedavisi için kullanılan kalsitonin ve alendronatın etkinliğini araştırmak ve bu iki tedavinin etkinliğini karşılaştırmak amacıyla yapıldı. Bu amaçla çalışmaya 30 erkek osteoporozlu hasta dahil edildi ve bunlar rastgele seçilerek 15'er kişilik 2 gruba ayrıldı. Hastalara lomber ve femur bölgesinden kemik mineral yoğunluk (KMY) ölçümü tedavi öncesi ve 1 yıllık tedavi sonrası olmak üzere 2 kez yaptırıldık Lomber KMY açısından gruplar kendi içinde tedavi öncesi, tedavi sonrası kıyaslamada istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir iyileşme saptandı (p 0.05). Femur KMY ölçümünün tedavi öncesi ve sonrasındaki değerleri hem grup içi ve hem de gruplar arası karşılaştırmasında bir farklılık saptanmadı (p>0.05).
