Treatment of hydatid disease of the lung with albendazole in children

Abstract

Aim: The results of medical treatment of the hydatid disease of the lung, which is a common health problem of children, with albendazole were evaluated. Method: In this prospective study, 22 consecutive children with hydatid disease of the lung, who were treated medically with albendazole between January 1995 and April 2001, were evaluated. Albendazole was given 10 mg/kg daily in two equally divided doses continuously during the course. Early and late outcomes were recorded. Results: Duration of the treatment varied between 2 to 18 months (mean 5.3±4.l). Complete radiologie recovery was observed in 20 cases, whilst the cyst dimensions decreased in the remaining two. Patient ages, and size and the number of the cysts did not affect the duration of the treatment. No adverse effect related to albendazole was encountered. The follow-up ranged between 2 months and 6.5 years. No recurrence was noted in the long term follow-up. Conclusion: Hydatid disease of the lung of the children can be successfully treated with albendazole

Amaç: Çalışmada, çocuklarda sık karşılaşılan bir sağlık sorunu olan akciğer kist hidatiğinde albendazol ile yapılan tıbbi tedavinin sonuçları değerlendirilmiştir. Yöntem: Ocak 1995-Nisan 2001 arasında kliniğimizde albendazol ile tedavi edilen ardışık 22 akciğer kist hidatiği olgusu ileriye dönük İncelendi. Olgularda ağızdan günde 10 mg/kg albendazol iki eşit doza bölünmüş olarak, tedavi süresince aralıksız uygulandı, Erken ve geç dönem izlem sonuçlan kaydedildi. Bulgular: Albendazol tedavisi 2 ay ile 18 ay arasında sürdü (ortalama 5.3 ±4.1). Radyolojik iyileşme 20 olguda gözlendi, 2 hastada kist boyutlarında küçülme saptandı. Hasta yaşı, kistin büyüklüğü ve sayısının tedavi süresi üzerine etkisi olmadı. Albendazole bağlı komplikasyon gelişmedi. Hastaların izlem süresi 2 ay ile 6.5 yıl arasında değişiyordu. Geç dönemde yeni kist gelişmedi. Sonuç: Çocukluk çağı akciğer kist hidatikleri albendazol ile başarıyla tedavi edilebilir.
