Abstract

Aim: The web pages offering misleading medical information have significant risks for the parents who want to obtain information on their child's medical diagnosis on the Internet. In this study, the features of the Turkish web pages on the surgical diseases of children, and the quality of the medical information presented for the parents in these pages were evaluated. Method: Turkish terms of the most frequent pediatric surgical diseases ("inguinal hernia", "undescended testis", "appendicitis", "hypospadias") were searched on the Internet using 7 search engines, of which 2 originate from Turkey (Altavista, Google, Yahoo, Lycos, Excite, Arabul and Netbul), and the addresses of the relevant web pages were retrieved. The features and the contents of the web pages, which presented information on pediatric surgery, were evaluated. The web pages, which offered medical information for the parents, were reviewed using the recommendations for the diseases outlined in a classic pediatric surgery textbook. Results: A total of 378 (88 %) of the retrieved 429 unique web address were accessible. Seventy-eight (20.6 %) of the accessible web pages offered medical information for the parents, nonetheless, 40 (51.2 %) of these web pages included misleading or insufficient information on the diseases. Sixty-seven (85.8 %) out of 78 were commercial or personal web pages, of which 5 were owned by amateurs. Six (7.6 %) and 5 (6.4 %) web pages were constructed by an academic institution and by a medical association, respectively. Conclusion: More than half of the Turkish web pages, which aimed to give medical information to the parents on the children's surgical diseases, contain misleading or insufficient information. Pediatric surgeons should assist to the parents who want to obtain medical information on their child's problems from the Internet.
