Abstract
Following the death of Sultan Malikshāh in 485/1092, the fight for the throne began in the Great Saljuq State. Then, in the fight for the throne between his sons Barkīāroq and Moḥammed Tapar, Barkīāroq won and ascended the Great Saljuq State’s throne (1094-1105). After the death of Barkīāroq in 498/1104, Moḥammad Tapar came to the throne (1105-1118). When Moḥammad Tapar died in 511/1118, his son Maḥmūd had come to the throne, but he had to meet his uncle Sanjar’s move for the throne. Facing his nephew Maḥmūd in the Battle of the Save, Sanjar defeated his nephew and became the sultan of the Great Saljuq State. When Sanjar claimed the power, he preferred to stay in the East and put Maḥmūd in charge of this new state by laying the foundations of the Iraqi Saljuq State to deal with the western issues. Since the foundation of the Iraqi Saljuqs, they had to struggle with the rebellions of the sultans and the efforts of the ‘Abbasid caliphs to regain the worldly politics. Sultan Maḥmūd managed to stay at the head of the Iraqi Saljuq State until his death (1118-1131) by fighting against his brothers and ‘Abbasid caliph al-Mostarshid bi-Allāh (1118-1135). After his death in 525/1131, his son Dāwūd came into the throne of the Iraqi Saljuq State for a short time (1131-1132). However, the new Iraqi Saljuq sultan was removed from the throne because he had not got the approval of Sultan Sanjar whom he was supposed to obey, also the ‘Abbasid caliph al-Mostarshid bi- Allāh had not read sermons on his behalf, and because of the rebellions of other Saljuq sultans. Nevertheless, Dāwūd did not give up his will for the sultanate. He tried to reclaim the throne by establishing an alliance with his uncles Ma‘sūd and Saljuqshāh, claimants for the throne like him, and with Abbasid caliph al-Mostarshid bi- Allāh. In this study, we will discuss Dāwūd’s – one of the rulers of the Iraqi Saljuq State despite the short-term – struggle for the throne and the alliances he had established during these struggles.
