Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is one of the most important etiological factors of lower respiratory tract infections in infants and young children. The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of the RSV in the ethiopathogenesis of respiratory tract infections which consist mostly of lower respiratory tract infections in infants and young children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study comprised of 89 children aged from 2 months to 24 months who were hospitalized at hospital during winter season of 2000 because of lower respiratory tract infections and laryngo-tracheobronchitis. Etiology of the infection was established on the basis of the presence of anti RSV antibodies in the sera, identified by means of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. RESULTS: RSV IgM positivity was found in 20 (22.5 %) and RSV IgG positivity in 38 (42.7%) of 89 children. CONCLUSION: This study showed that RSV infection is important in the etiology of respiratory tract infection in infants in our region.

Özet

AMAÇ: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) bebekler ve küçük çocuklardaki alt solunum yolu enfeksiyonlarının önemli etkenlerinden biridir. Bu çalışmanın amacı bebek ve çocuklardaki çoğunluğu alt solunum yolu enfeksiyonlarına ait olmak üzere solunum yolu enfeksiyonlarının etiyolojisinde RSV'nin rolünün araştırılmasıdır. GEREÇ VE YÖNTEM: Çalışmaya 2000 yılı kış sezonunda alt solunum yolu enfeksiyonu ve laringo-trakeobronşit tanısıyla hastanede yatırılarak izlenen 2-24 ay arası toplam 89 bebek dahil edilmiş; alınan serum örneklerinde mikro ELISA yöntemiyle RSV antikorları araştırılmıştır. BULGULAR: RSV IgM pozitifliği olguların 20'sinde (% 22.5) saptanırken 38 olguda da (% 42.7) RSV IgG pozitfliği saptanmıştır. SONUÇ: Bu sonuçlar bölgemizde de bebek ve küçük çocuklardaki alt solunum yolu enfeksiyonlarının etiyolosinde RSV'nin başta gelen etkenlerden biri olduğunu göstermektedir.
