Abstract
A fourteen-year-old boy is presented who was diagnosed in another hospital as ulcerative colitis with the symptomatology of abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea in whom no improvement was observed with sulfasalazine therapy. Pathological findings of physical, colonoscopic and laboratory evaluation included failure to thrive, paleness, clubbing, hematochezia, hepatomegaly, iron deficiency anemia and hypoalbuminemia. Barium enema and colonoscopy revealed multiple polyps. Rectal bleeding, anemia and hypoalbuminemia persisted in spite of iron therapy and polypectomies. Total colectomy was performed after which clinical and biochemical improvement occurred. Because of the rarity of this condition as well as the symptomatology and findings mimicking ulcerative colitis, the patient is presented.
