Abstract

Objective: The circulating levels of the cytokines (TNF-a , IL-6) as the markers for activation of the immune system and whether cytokines play a role in the pathophysiology of the disease have been investigated in preeclamptic patients. Material and Methods: 47 patients with preeclampsia and eclampsia were compared to 42 healthy pregnant women. Peripheral venous blood samples were obtained and serum levels of circulating TNF-a, and IL-6 were measured by enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA). Results: There were no significant changes in concentrations of TNF-a, and IL-6 levels in preeclamptic patients compared to normal pregnant patients. Conclusions: Although there were no differences in the levels of circulating cytokines (TNF-a, and IL-6), the role of them in the pathophysiologic mechanisms of preeclampsia needs further investigation.
