PUBLIC SPACE IN URBAN SPACE: A REVIEW FROM RICHARD SENNETT’S PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

Concentration of debates on the concept of public space coincides with the 1970’s. The notion of the public space, especially addressed by Jürgen Habermas and Hannah Arendt, has gained another dimension within the framework of Richard Sennett's "approach to urban space and the public space of which it is largely identical." According to Sennett, the most important feature of the city is that it is a public space that offers the opportunity to relate to others without hiding personal dif-ferences and imposing personal values on others. In this context, the public space, characterized as the carrier of democracy, has gradually lost its true meaning to the new lifestyle and institutions that capitalism has brought since the 19th century, and has left the place of sociality indivisible and the behavior of individuals within the public has changed drastically. This process of revealing the "intimate society" has resulted in the loss of the vitality of the public sphere and the separation of cities from communities into a dimension of human expe-rience. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the importance of the public space in urban space within the framework of Richard Sennett's approach. In this con-text, the concept of public space will be discussed within the context of the rela-tionship with the private sphere and not examined in detail. It will be dealt with to the extent that it helps the understanding of the urban space and public space relation established by Richard Sennett.

Özet

Kamusal alan kavramına ilişkin tartışmaların gündeme gelmesi, 1970’li yıllar son-rasına denk gelmektedir. Özellikle Jürgen Habermas ve Hannah Arendt tarafın-dan ele alınan kamusal alan kavramı, Richard Sennett’in “kent mekânı ve kamu-sal alanı büyük ölçüde özdeş gördüğü yaklaşımı” çerçevesinde başka bir boyut kazanmıştır. Sennett’e göre, kentin en önemli özelliği, onun kişisel farklılıkları gizlemeden ve kişisel değerleri başkasına dayatmadan başkalarıyla ilişki kurma fırsatı veren bir kamusal alan olmasıdır. Bu çerçevede demokrasinin taşıyıcısı olarak nitelendiri-len kamusal alan, 19. yüzyıldan itibaren kapitalizmin getirdiği yeni yaşam tarzı ve kurumlarla gerçek anlamını giderek yitirmiş, toplumsallık yerini bireyselliğe bı-rakmış ve bireylerin kamu içindeki davranışları köklü bir biçimde değişmiştir. “Mahrem toplumu”nu ortaya çıkaran bu süreç, kamusal alanın canlılığını yitir-mesi ve kentlerin topluluklara ayrılarak insan yaşantısının bir boyutu olmaktan çıkmasıyla sonuçlanmıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Richard Sennett’in yaklaşımı çerçevesinde kent mekânında kamusal alanın önemini ortaya koymaktır. Bu bağlamda kamusal alan kavramı, özel alanla ilişkisi çerçevesinde ele alınarak ayrıntılı olarak incelenmeyecek, Ric-hard Sennett’in kurduğu kent mekânı ve kamusal alan ilişkisinin anlaşılmasına yardımcı olduğu ölçüde ele alınacaktır.
