Abstract

Objective: Warts, is a common infection disease caused by Human papilloma virus (HPV). The role of polimorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) are unclear in the pathogenesis of warts. Two cytoplasmic enzymes, Myeloperoxidase (MPO) and Superoxide dismutase (Cu-Zn SOD) protect the cells against oxidant activity. In this study, we aim to determine the activities of MPO and Cu-Zn SOD in patients with non-genital warts. Materials and Methods: In this study, 31 consecutive patients with warts (15 female, 16 male) and 34 healthy cases having no disease were attended. Genital and filiformis warts were excluded from the study. The patients according to the types, the durations, the numbers, and the localizations of lesions were classified. The activities of Cu-Zn SOD and MPO in PMN were measured as spectrophotometrically. Results: There were no Cu-Zn SOD and MPO activities in patients with warts statistically significant compared to the control cases (p>0.05). Besides, these each enzyme activities were not correlated statistically among the types, the durations, the numbers, and the localizations of lesions (p>0.05). Conclusion: No changed Cu-Zn SOD activities indicate that oxidative stress in neutrophils does not occur in patients with non-genital warts. No difference MPO activities remind that this enzyme does not have a role in the regression of warts. Moreover, it may be thought that it could be successful in HPV infections, due to the antiviral effects of MPO to be implemented locally for the purpose of treatment.
