Treatment of acute arthritis with inraarticular administariton of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) in calves

Abstract

In this study, intraarticular administration of Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) for the treatment of acute aseptic and septic arthritis in calves was clinically evaluated. Study material was consisted of 72 joints of 33 calves aged between 2 weeks and 2 months in different breed and sex. After clinical examination and synovial fluid analysis (volume, colorr, viscosity, appearance, presence of folliculant mass etc.) animals suffering from aseptic and septic arthritis were included in the study. For the treatment purposes 20% of DMSO in Lactate Ringer solution was used. Following the aspiration of pathologic synovial fluid, approximately 10-20 ml of the DMSO solution was injected into the inflammed joint according to the size of the joint and flushed continuously in this fashion. It was repeated until the clear and transparent fluid obtained. Animals were controlled every two days and flushing was reapplied when the synovial fluid regained its normal properties In aseptic joints one application in 10 out of 22 cases and two applications in 12 cases provided satisfactory healing, in septic joints 3 applications in 30, 4 applications in 17 and 5 applicaitons in 1 case (except for one diedduring the study and another one had inflammation in two joints) were practiced and showed total healing in all cases.

Özet

Bu çalışmada Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO)' in buzağılarda akut aseptik ve septik artritislerin sağaltımında intraartiküler kullanımı klinik olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışma materyalini değişik ırk ve cinsiyette, yaşları 2 hafta - 2 ay arasında değişen 33 buzağıya ait 72 eklem oluşturdu. Klinik ve sinovyal sıvının fiziksel muayeneleriyle (volüm, renk, viskozite, görünüş, follikülent materyal varlığı gibi) saptanan akut seyirli aseptik ve septik nitelikteki artritis olguları çalışma kapsamına alındı. Sağaltım amacıyla DMSO' in Laktatlı Ringer içinde hazırlanan %20' lik solüsyonu kullanıldı. Patolojik sinovyal sıvının aspirasyonundan sonra bu sıvıdan 10-20 mi volümde intraartiküler enjeksiyon ve aspirasyon ile eklemin lavajı yapıldı. Verilen sıvı berrak olarak geri alınıncaya kadar işlem yinelendi. Hayvanların günaşırı kontrolleri yapılarak aynı uygulama sinovyal sıvı normal niteliklerini kazanıncaya kadar sürdürüldü. Aseptik yangı saptanan 22 eklemin 10' unda tek, 12' sinde 2 uygulama ile iyileşme sağlanırken, septik tipte artritis bulunan 50 eklemden 30' unda 3. 17' sinde 4 ve 1' inde 5 uygulama yapıldı; 2 ekleminde yangı bulunan ve tedavi sırasında ölen bir buzağı dışında tümünde iyileşme sağlandı.
