Galatasaray High School: The Favorite Cultural Venue in Istanbul Between 1916-1956

Abstract
Galatasaray High School, former name Mekteb-i Sultani, has an important history because of being the one of the first high schools established in the Ottoman Empire. The architectural characteristics of the building and the place where the school is located are noteworthy in terms of their physical characteristics as well as the authenticity of their educational programs. For this reason, the school, both in the last years of the Ottoman Empire and in the first years of the Republic in Istanbul, was the first place to come in mind for exhibitions, concerts and other cultural or artistic events. Thus, in this article, Galatasaray Exhibitions, Domestic Products Exhibitions and various cultural and artistic activities realized at Galatasaray High School will be introduced regarding the role of the foundation as a cultural place in Istanbul.
Özet
Galatasaray Lisesi Mekteb-i Sultanı sanıyla Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda kurulan ilk liselerden biri olması nedeniyle önemli bir geçmişe sahiptir. Sahip olduğu eğitim programlarının özgünlüğünün yanı sıra fiziksel özellikleri açısından da dikkat çeken okulun bulunduğu yer ve binasının mimari özellikleri de önem teşkil eder. Ancak Lisenin az bilinen bir diğer önemi de hem Osmanlı İmparatorluğunun son yıllarında hem de Cumhuriyetin ilk yıllarında İstanbul’da önemli bir sergi, konser, toplantı vb. tür etkinlikler için uzun yıllar ilk akla gelen yer olmuş olmasıdır. Bu makalede Galatasaray Lisesi’nde gerçekleştirilmiş Galatasaray Sergileri, Yerli Mallar Sergileri ve çok çeşitli kültür ve sanat faaliyetleri kurumun İstanbul’da bir kültür mekânı olarak tanınmasındaki rolü açısından tanıtılacaktır.
