Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different salinity levels (NaCI) on head lettuce (Lactuca Sativa L. capitata cv. Bombala) development in soilless culture. This study was conducted to cover two separate production periods (1st and 2nd production periods). The randomized blocks were arranged on the basis of the experimental design with 3 replicates in two production periods. Three different NaCI salinity levels (S0: control, S1: S0+1 dS m-1, S2: S0+2 dS m-1) with Hoagland Solution on lettuce development was tested in a perlite substrate. The Hoagland solution was used as control (S0). Salinity levels of S1 and S2 salinity levels were adjusted by adding stock NaCl solution. The results obtained had a statistically significant effect on the yield of the NaCI levels. The yield decreased as NaCI concentration of the nutrient solution increased. The highest yield for the production periods was determined in the control (S0) subjects without NaCI application, while the lowest yield was determined for the highest NaCI concentration of the nutrient solution (S2). Results in relation to lettuce showed that NaCI levels had a statistically significant effect on yield. The yield decreased as NaCI concentration of the nutrient solution increased. Moreover, the highest yield for production periods was determined in control (S0), while the lowest yield was determined for the highest NaCI level (S2). It can be concluded that the effect of salinity on plant head diameter (width), plant head height (height), plant dry weight and vitamin C content was found to be statistically non-significant. However, the increase in salt levels decreased these values. The lowest leaf proportional water coverage values and the highest leaf cell membrane damage index values were determined in S2 level. Overall; salinity, which has made up with NaCI, conditions have negative effects on soilless head lettuce cultivation.
