THE MOBILITY OF THE NEW MIDDLE CLASS ON THE SLIPPERY GROUND OF FLEXIBILITY AND PRECARITY

Esneklik ve Güvencesizliğin Kaygan Zemininde Yeni Orta Sınıfın “Hareketliliği”

Abstract

This article, tries to discuss “social change” and “social mobility” by focusing on the private sector workers in professional or executive positions. It is a case study that was carried out with the technique of in-depth interviews made with 25 members of the new middle class members living in Ankara and Istanbul, namely, two largest cities of Turkey. It tries to shed light on how the new middle class members perceive and evaluate flexibility and precarity, as well as social mobility and the class position in the process of labor. The findings will be discussed in the axis of social change. Since the new middle class members make a remarkable contribution to the reproduction of the system through the new myth of social mobility as “happy minority” of the labor class, which has gained advantages under the flexible and precarious conditions of new labor processes. As a result, the social mobility of the new middle class members was interpreted via their contribution to the reproduction of the social system.

Özet

Türkiye’nin iki büyük kenti olan Ankara ve İstanbul’da yaşayan, özel sektörde profesyonel ve yönetici pozisyonlarda ücretli olarak çalışan 25 yeni orta sınıf mensubu ile derinlemesine mülakat tekniği ile gerçekleştirilen alan çalışmasının anlatıldığı bu makalenin ekseninde “toplumsal değişme” ve “sosyal hareketlilik” tartışmaları yer almaktadır. Yeni orta sınıf mensuplarınca emek sürecindeki esneklik ve güvencesizlik ile sosyal hareketlilik ve sınıf pozisyonunun nasıl algılandıkları ve değerlendirildiklerine odaklanılmıştır. Çalışmada bu odak noktasından elde edilen bulgular, toplumsal değişme sorunsalı ekseninde tartışılmıştır. Sonuç olarak yeni emek süreçlerinin esneklik ve güvencesizlik koşullarında avantaj sahibi olmuş olan emekçi kesimin “mutlu azınlığı” olarak yeni orta sınıf mensupları, yeni bir sosyal hareketlilik miti üzerinden sistemin yeniden üretimine farklı ve önemli bir katkıda bulunmaktadır. Bu nedenle yeni orta sınıfın sosyal hareketliliği toplumsal sistemin yeniden üretimine katkısı aracılığıyla yorumlanmıştır.
