Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine effects of Na2SO4 type salt stress on Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. and Raphanus sativus L. during phases of germination and first seedling growth. While seeds of L. esculentum Mill. cv. H-2274 and 11D-230 genotypes lost their ability to sprout in 5000 ppm Na2SO4 concentrations under photoperiod conditions, the same genotypes were more tolerant to 2000 ppm and higher Na2SO4 concentrations under dark conditions. Although it is possible to mention about positive effects of Na2SO4 on hypocotyle development in some genotypes in lower concentrations and under photoperiod conditions, there have been indications that hypocotyle developments are inhibited in higher Na2SO4 concentrations. While increases were observed in Na2SO4 concentrations up to 2000 ppm in root development of L. esculentum Mill. cv. H-2274 seedlings which were applied photoperiod, the highest average root lengths of the series were obtained with R. sativus L. cv. 8TR-18 in 200 ppm Na2SO4 concentration. However, average root lengths of L. esculentum Mill. cv. 11D-230 seedlings under photoperiod conditions had no statistical aspect encouraging main root development in any concentration. On the other hand, the highest average root lengths of R. sativus L. cv. 8TR-17 were obtained with the control group. While variations in lateral root development of L. esculentum Mill. cv. 11D-230 and R. sativus L. cv. 8TR-17 seedlings caused by increasing concentrations of Na2SO4 when the seedlings were incubated under dark conditions were not statistically significant, the variations caused by increasing concentrations of Na2SO4 on cotyledon development of R. sativus L. cv. 8TR-17 were also statistically insignificant.
