Private tutoring center teachers and their working conditions

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate problems that teachers working in private tutoring centers (PTC) are likely to be faced and whether there is a relationship between the problems and teachers’ demographic characteristics as well as the departments they work. The data were collected from a total number of 353 teachers working in PTCs through a scale developed by the researchers using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Findings of the study have revealed that the problems teachers are faced are related to PTC administration, the violation of personal rights, time management, and amount of salary. Subsequently, T-test and ANOVA were applied to see whether the problems differ across teachers’ demographic characteristics and departments they work. The results have indicated that there is not a statistically significant relationship between gender of the teachers and the problems they are faced in PTCs, and that the problems in concern are mostly related to education level, marital status, and the departments of the teachers. In conclusion, pedagogical implications of the study was discussed and a couple of suggestions were offered for further research.
Özet
Bu araştırmanın amacı, özel öğretim kurs merkezinde çalışan öğretmenlerin karşılaştıkları problemi belirlemek ve bu problemin onların demografik ve çalıştığı birimlere göre nasıl değiştiğini incelemektir. Bunun için özel öğretim kurs merkezlerinde çalışan 353 öğretmenden veri toplanarak, öğretmen sorunlarının belirlendiği ölçek geliştirilmiştir. Ölçek geliştirme sürecinde açımlayıcı ve doğrulayıcı faktör analizi kullanılmıştır. Araştırma bulgularına göre, özel öğretim kurs merkezlerinde çalışan öğretmenlerin kurs yönetimi, zaman yönetimi, özlük hakkı ve maaş ile sorunlarının olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ardından belirlenen sorunların öğretmenlerin demografik özelliklere ve çalıştığı birimlere göre ilişkisine T-test ve ANOVA metodu ile bakılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre, cinsiyet değişkeni anlamsız çıkarken, eğitim derecesi, evli olup olmaması ve çalıştığı birimler özel öğretim kurumlarındaki öğretmen sorunlarını istatiksel olarak anlamlı şekilde etkilemektedir. Çalışmanın sonunda, çalışmanın araştırma ve uygulama için değeri tartışılmıştır.
