Evaluation of implementation of human rights and citizenship inter-discipline domain in the context of social studies teachers opinions

Abstract
In Elementary Schools in Turkey it is aimed to gain essential competencies to future citizens. The important parts of these competencies are related to knowledge, skill, value and attitudes in human rights and citizenship education. One of three approaches related to Human Rights and Citizenship Education (HRCE) is interdiscipline domain implementation that has been applied in Turkey since 2004. The aim of this research is to determine social studies teachers’ opinions related to HRCE inter-discipline domain implementation. Data being obtained via questionnaire being prepared for this purpose are interpreted in terms of curriculum, textbook, classroom environment, out-of-school activity and teachers’ competencies dimensions. At the end of the research it is seen that most of the teachers have positive opinions about teachers’ competencies, curriculum and textbook dimensions while they have adverse opinions about classroom environment and out-of-school activity dimensions.
Özet
Türkiye’de temel eğitim okullarında geleceğin yurttaşları için gerekli asgari yeterlikler verilmektedir. Bu yeterliklerin önemli bir kısmı da insan hakları ve vatandaşlık eğitimindeki bilgi, beceri, değer ve tutumlarla ilgilidir. İHVE öğretimi ile ilgili üç yaklaşımdan biri de, 2004 yılında ülkemizde uygulanmaya başlanan, ara disiplin alanı uygulamasıdır. Bu araştırma ile ilköğretim okullarında uygulanmakta olan İHVE ara disiplin alanı uygulaması ile ilgili sosyal bilgiler öğretmenlerinin görüşlerini belirlemek amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla oluşturulan anket yoluyla elde edilen bulgular program, kitap, ortam, ders dışı etkinlik ve öğretmen yeterliği boyutlarında yorumlanmıştır. Araştırma sonunda sosyal bilgiler öğretmenlerinin çoğunluğunun öğretmen yeterliliği, öğretim programı ve kitap boyutlarında olumlu : ortam ve ders dışı etkinlik boyutlarında ise olumsuz görüşlere sahip oldukları görülmüştür.
