Abstract
This study has been carried out in the academic years 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 in the primary schools in central Van and its towns. The focus of the study is the teachers of Mathmatics and students in the primary schools in central Van and its towns. 24 teachers of Mathmatics and their 1462 students were chosen as the sampling (two classes of each teacher: an experimental group and a control group). The aim of this study is to universalize the use of active learning methods of teachers of Mathmatics, to enable the students to actively take part in the learning process and to determine the effects of active learning methods on Mathmatic succes. To reach the aims, the study was piloted in two primary schools in central Van and applied in primary schools in the towns and villages. Chosen topics were taught by using discovery method, cooperative learning techniques or by active learning activities in the experiment group while in control group they were taught by using traditional methods. Pre test – post test model with a control group was applied in the study. To analyse the findings of the study SPSS program was used. According to the findings of the study Active learning methods have more positive effects on the students academic achivements (success) than traditional methods. However, it is found out that active learning methods have some negative aspects resulting from the variables of student, school conditions (circumstances) and syllabus.
