Abstract
This paper focuses on the emergence of social work profession and its development in the historical process. The development process of the profession consists of five periods: pre-1920, 1921-1940, 1941-1960, 1961-1980, and 1980 and aftenvards. Within the framework of this process, developing dimensions, methods and knowledge base of social workprofession are examined.

Bu makalede sosyal hizmet mesleğinin ortaya çıkışı ve süreç içinde gösterdiği gelişme ele alınmaya çalışılmıştır. Sosyal hizmet mesleğinin gelişme süreci 1920 öncesi, 1921- 1940'lı yıllar, 1941-1960’h yıllar, 1961- 1980 ’li yıllar, 1980 ve sonrası şeklinde sınıflandırılarak açıklanmıştır.Yukarıda belirtilen süreçler içinde sosyal hizmet mesleğinin gelişen boyutları, yöntemleri, bilgi tabanı gibi konular ele alınmıştır.
