Abstract

The main subject of this study is the reflection of the left currents that began in Turkey in the 1960s to the Turkish cinema. In Yeşilçam films, which are accepted as national cinema, leftist thingking makes itself felt in different dimensions among all themes sych as love, immigratiın, poverty and feudal relations. Examining the issues dealt with in Yeşilçam cinema with a “statist left” perspective brought the search for alternative cinema to the agenda and as a result of the search for “revolutionary” cinema, the Cinematek Association was established. But, although this revolutionary cinema achieved partial success, it failed to break the monopoly of national cinema. One of the hypotesis of this study is that: the statist left characteristic that set out Turkey left clearly shows itself in Yeşilçam cinema. Another argument in the study is that the statist left seen in Yeşilçam films is not display of poor in terms of criticism and opposition culture and is not merely bless state. Issues such as employment, immigration, slums, and poverty are realistically depicted in these films. In this sense, although Yeşilçam cinema has a “national cinema monopoly”, it is an oppositional cinema. In this study literature search has been done. Different books and articles on the sucject have been examined. In addition, content analysis method has been used by examining some Turkish movies to support the hypotheses.
