Abstract
After the loss of the First World War, some parts of the Ottoman lands were occupied by the Allies. Greece, which sided with the Allies in the war, also wanted to take advantage of this situation. As part of the Megali Idea project, they tried owning the lands they wanted to possess. To achieve this goal, the Greeks conducted preparations by many resources in Western Anatolia, Thrace, and the Black Sea regions before embarking on invasions. Besides, these means were used to settle the invasions and put the people in the regions under pressure. The Hellenic Red Cross Society has been one of the most important means. In addition to the conducting humanitarian activities, the Society helped thousands of ganged Rums infiltrate Ottoman territory under the name of the immigrant. Greeks who were brought as doctors, nurses, etc. also educated and organized these Rum and local ones in the regions. Red Cross officers were also de facto involved in these organizations. Military equipment such as weapons, ammunition, and uniforms that came with Red Cross ships were also distributed to these gangs. They have attacked Muslims and caused the disorder. Even Red Cross soldiers and doctors personally performed attacks. Apart from these, the Hellenic Red Cross was also intended to be used as a political instrument for Greece in propaganda and intelligence matters. These activities were conducted in cooperation with metropolitans, Greek officers, representatives of the Allies, and other Greek organizations. This study aims to examine the share of the Greek Red Cross Society in the acts of the Greeks against the Ottoman Empire in Western Anatolia, Thrace, and Black Sea regions such as ganging, arms smuggling, and propaganda. In general, it has been discussed between 1919 and 1920, when the activities of the society were concentrated.
