Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper was to assess the advantages and disadvantages of a repeat curettage and verify a diagnosis of malignant disease in patients with hydatidiform mole. STUDY DESİGN: One hundred one patients with hydatidiform mole admitted to Dr. Zekai Tahir Burak Women's Hospital between 1995 and 1997, underwent a repeat uterine curettage approximately one week after a molar evacuation. The pathology reports of each patient were reconsidered and the relationship between the histological findings was analysed. RESULT: In only one (1.04%) of these curettages was a diagnosis of choriocarsinoma established. This study showed that evolution of malignancy after hydatidiform mole was rarely proven-by routine repeat curettage. . . CONCLUSION: We concluded that the procedure should be reserved for patients with subinvoluted uterus, ultrasonographic evidence of intrauterine tumor, abnormal or persistent uterine bleeding and elevated hCG values.
