Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the binding properties of rat ovarian epidermal growth factor receptors and the possible modulation of the level of these receptors by gonadotropins. STUDY DESIGN: Female wistar rats were obtained at 45 days otage and divided into 2 groups as study and control. In study group, 100 ILJ/ml of pregnant mare's serum gonadotropins (PMSG) were injected intraperitonealiy. 24 hours after PMSG injection, 3 of rats in study group and 3 öf control rats were sacrified. 48 hours after PMSG injection, other 3 of study rats and 3 of controls were sacrified. 100 lU/ml human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) was injected to 6 rats in study group at 48 hours after PMSG injection. 19 hours after HCG, 3 of study rats and 3 of controls were sacrified.Rest 3 of study rats and 3 of controls were sacrified 44 hours after HCG injection. The presence of epidermal growth factor receptors were investigated with immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: 24 hours after PMSG.there was weak EGFR expression in control group while moderate staining was seen in study group. 48 hours after PMSG, EGFR expression increased to moderate staining in control group while it increased to intense staining in PMSG stimulated ovaries. After ovulation, EGFR expression decreased in both groups. It was weak in study group while it was not detectable in control. 44 hours after HCG, EGFR expression reincreased in both groups. CONCLUSION: It was found that EGFR expression increases until ovulation and decreases postovulatory, gonadotropins cause an increasing in EGFR expression. Our results are in accordance with studies previously done and show that EGF has an important role in reproductive physiology. (Gynecol Obstet Reprod Med. 1997; 3:394-397)
