The value of transrectal ultrasonography in detection of parametrial invasion of cervical cancer

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To assess the reliability of transrectal ultrasonography, in the evaluation of local extension of cervical carcinoma to the lateral parametrium. \ &#9632; STUDY DESIGN: Transrectal ultrasonographic examinations were performed on 26 patients with uterine cervical cancer to assess the parametrial invasion. The findings were compared with data, obtained by bimanual rectal examination. Fifty-two parametria in 26 patients were historically examined following surgery. &#8226; RESULTS: Sensitivity, specifity, predictive value, negative predictive value and predictive accuracy of transrectal ultrasonography and rectal examination were 0.85-0.28 (p<0.05), 0.95-0.93 (p>0.05), 0.75-0.40 (p<0.05), 0.97-0.89 (p>0.05) and 0.94-0.84 (p>0.05), respectively. CONCLUSION: Transrectal ultrasonography may prove to be a useful diagnostic tool to determine the preoperative stage of uterine cervical cancer. (Gynecol Obstet Reprod Med 1997; 3:366-369)
