Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the presence and levels of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) elastase-like activity (ELA) in menopausal women with or without periodontal breakdown. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 37 menopausal women who were not under Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) were included in the study. They were divided into two subgroups, based on their clinic periodontal status, as being healthy with no apparent periodontal breakdown (n=18) or having significant clinical and radiographic periodontal breakdown (n=19). Clinical periodontal status were recorded in each subject. GCF were obtained by use of standardized paper strips and volume was determined with Periotron 8000. ELA in GCF samples were analyzed by spectrophotometric technique. RESULTS: Significantly higher GCF ELA levels were observed in periodontally-diseased menopausal group when compared to periodontally-healthy menopausal group (p< 0.05). CONCLUSION: GCF ELA is likely to be related with the periodontal status and menopause seems to have no significant contributory effect on GCF ELA levels. Menopause, based on GCF ELA levels, does not seem to play an additional role on clinical periodontal status.

Araştırmamız Periodontal yıkımı olan ve olmayan menopozlu hastaların dişeti oluğu sıvısında (DOS) elastaz-benzeri aktivite (EBA) varlığının ve düzeyinin saptanması amacıyla planlanmıştır. Çalışmaya Hormon Replasman Tedavisi (HRT) görmeyen 37 menopozlu hasta dahil edilmiştir. Hastalar periodontal durumlarına göre sağlıklı (n=18) ve hastalıklı (n=19) olmak üzere iki gruba ayrılmıştır. Her deneyde klinik ölçümlerle periodontal durum değerlendirilmiştir. Dişeti oluğu sıvısı kağıt şeritler ile toplanıp, Periotron 8000 ile değerlendirilmiştir ve EBA düzeyleri spektrofotometrik yöntem kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Periodontal hastalıklı menopozlu bireylerde DOS EBA düzeyi periodontal yönden sağlıklı menopozlu bireylere göre anlamlı derecede yüksek bulunmuştur (p< 0.05). DOS EBA düzeyi periodontal durumla ilişkili bulunmuştur ve menopozun bu enzim üzerinde etkisi olmadığı gözlenmiştir.
