Abstract
The Amniotic Band Syndrome is a rare collection of malformations proposed to be a sequela of intrauterine rupture of the amnion; results in an unpredictable constellation of fetal anomalies. This syndrome is a sporadic condition that occurs in approximately 1: 1200 to 1: 15000 live births and in 1-2% malformated births. The anatomic region affected and the complexity of the defects are related to the timing of the rupture and band location. We present a case with severe craniofacial, thoracal and acral malformations. A brief review of the proposed pathogenesis, characteristic features of the syndrome is also presented. Early detection with ultrasonography and in utero correction of amniotic band syndrome still awaits further refinement. (Gynecol Obstet Reprod Med 2000; 6:145-146)
