Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Since congenital toxoplasmosis can result in morbidity and mortality of the fetus serological tests to detect Toxoplasma gondii infection during pregnancy are generally used as routine perinatal screening tests. Positive seroprevalence of congenital toxoplasmosis in a community indicates the necessity of these tests as perinatal screening tests. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of congenital toxoplasmosis in Denizli, Turkey. STUDY DESIGN: Toxoplasma IgM antibodies were investigated in cord blood samples of 269 consecutive newborns using enzyme immunoassay procedure. RESULTS: No seropositivity (0%) of congenital Toxoplasma infection was detected in our study population. CONCLUSION: Congenital toxoplasmosis rate in our community is found to be lower that was expected. Large population studies and cost-effectiveness analyses are needed to determine the necessity of serological screening of Toxoplasma infection during pregnancy as a perinatal screening test in Turkish population.
