Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the etiology, behaviour and outcome of the cases which prenatally diagnosed as fetal hydrothorax and/or ascides which is a syndrome characterised by accumulation of pleural effusion and/or ascitic fluid, without generalized skin edema. Study Design: During the period of 1 January 2001 to 1 June 2003, six fetuses with isolated fetal ascites were identified at our tertiary perinatology department prospectively. Results: Chromosomal (case 4), metabolic (case 2), cardiovascular (case 6), idiopatic and /or structural (case 2, case 3, case 4 and case 6) disorders were diagnosed prenatally. Case 5 survived during the follow up period postnatally and birth weight of subject was 2000 grams. Conclusion: The pathogenesis of idiopathic isolated fetal ascites is unclear. Both early prenatal diagnosis and an a well planned perinatal management can contribute to the improved fetal outcome of this pathologic condition.
