The effect of smoking on intraocular pressure in nonglaucomatous cases

Abstract
Purpose: To investigate the effect of cigarette smoking on intraocular pressure (IOP) in nonglaucomatous cases. Materials and Methods: 195 nonglaucomatous male cases with a mean age of 53.7±7.1 (range:40-68 years) were divided into three groups according to their ages. Group 1 consisted of 58 cases (range:40-49 year-old), group 2 consisted of 93 cases (range:50-59 year-old) and group 3 consisted of 44 cases (over 60-year-old). The cases were also divided into three groups according to their smoking status. 47 of the cases had never smoked before (nonsmokers), 76 of them were active-smokers at the time of the study and 72 cases hadnot smoked for at least 1 year before the study (ex-smokers). Nonparametrik t-test, ANOVA one way variance analysis and regression analysis were used in statistical analysis. Results: The mean IOP was 13.1±2.4 mmHg in non-smokers, 14.7±2.2 mmHg in ex-smokers and it was 15.8±2.6 mmHg in active-smokers. The mean IOP of active-smokers was found to be statistically significantly higher than the IOPs of non-smokers and ex-smokers (P<0.001, P=0.005). No significant differences were detected between the IOPs according to the smoking status in group 1 but, in group 2 and 3, the IOPs of the non-smokers were found to be statistically significantly lower than the ex-smokers and the active smokers (P<0.001). Conclusion: The IOP was found to be lower in non-smokers than active smokers and ex-smokers in normal population especially in older ages.

Amaç: Glokomu olmayan normal olgularda, sigara içiminin göz içi basıncına (GİB) etkisinin saptanması. Gereç ve Yöntem: Ortalama yaşı 53.7±7.1 (40-68 yaş) olan 195 erkek olgu, yaşlarına göre, grup 1 (40-49 yaş, 58 olgu), grup 2 (50-59 yaş, 93 olgu) ve grup 3 (60 yaş ve üzeri, 44 olgu) olarak üçe ayrıldı. Olgular sigara içimi durumlarına göre ise, hiç içmemiş (47 olgu), daha önce içmiş ancak en az bir yıldır içmeyen (72 olgu) ve aktif içici (76 olgu) olarak üç gruba ayrıldı. İstatistiksel analizlerde, non parametrik t-testi, ANOVA tek yönlü varyans analizi ve regresyon analizi kullanıldı. Bulgular: Ortalama GİB sigara hiç içmemiş olgularda 13.1±2.4 mmHg, en az bir yıldır içmeyen olgularda 14.7±2.2 mmHg, aktif içicilerde ise 15.8±2.6 mmHg saptandı. Aktif içicilerde GİB, diğer olgulara oranla istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ölçüde yüksek saptandı (P<0.001, P=0.005). Sigara içimine göre, Grup 1’de GİB değerleri arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark görülmezken, grup 2 ve 3 te sigara hiç içmemiş olgularda, GİB değerleri istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ölçüde düşük saptandı (P<0.001). Sonuç: Glokomu olmayan normal bireylerde sigara içiminin, GİB değerleri üzerinde etkili olduğu, özellikle aktif içicilerde GİB’nın yüksek bulunduğu sonucuna gidildi.
